Building Community After School

Stanton Community Center

Stanton Community Center Tutoring Club

For over 20 years, St. Anne's has collaborated with the Stanton Community Center to provide an after-school program on Mondays-Thursdays from 3:00-4:00 p.m.. This longstanding partnership is a testament to our commitment to the education and well-being of our children.

Initially, we provided homework assistance. Assigning homework for elementary students in AACPS is now optional and rarely assigned. Therefore, our volunteers support our students by reading books with them from our great library and helping them acquire basic math skills. Additionally, we strive to build 1:1 relationships with our children.

We are blessed to have faithful volunteers from St. Anne's, St. Mary's High School, Severn High School, Calvary United Methodist Church, and our Annapolitan and Bowie neighbors. Since volunteers serve one day per week, we continue to need additional volunteers.

We strive to be an encouraging presence in each child's life, as there are many opportunities to share and model the foundation of God's love.

Our early arrivals, first and second graders, will watch the door, waiting for volunteers to enter. They will place themselves in a line—"I get the next one." They are great at remembering which day or days volunteers will appear.

Building relationships with children when they enter our after-school program and following their development from grade level to grade level brings tremendous joy and thankfulness to me personally.
