Preparing Disciples through Formation

Our wonderful Scholars on Scripture series has led us into the sacred world of God’s Word where we meet Jesus Christ. This Eastertide finds us reading through the Psalms. This beautiful collection of hymns of praise, lament, and thanksgiving, is a blessing to every disciple who, in the words of one of my favorite Collects, takes the time to “hear them, read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them.” Here we find Christ as well as ourselves. Here we pray and converse with God.

To be a disciple is to engage in discipleship. But first, we must be taught.

“Teach me to do what pleases you, for you are my God; let your good Spirit lead me on level ground,” says Psalm 143:10.

And God replies: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way that you should go.” Psalm 32:9.

The Book of Common Prayer provides a 30-day cycle for reading through the Psalms, as well as a seven-week cycle in the Daily Office. Try one. Then you can join the psalmists as they sing: “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me bless his holy Name.” Psalm 103:1.
